Rabbi Moses Abraham Birnbaum assumed the spiritual leadership of the Plainview Jewish Center in August, 1994.
Rabbi Birnbaum previously served for twelve years as Associate Executive Vice-President and Director of Chaplaincy Services of the New York Board of Rabbis. He has also served congregations in New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts and was a Hillel rabbi at Rutgers University at the beginning of his professional career.
A graduate of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, Rabbi Birnbaum also holds a Masters Degree in Jewish communal service from Brandeis University. Rabbi Birnbaum has also studied at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Rabbi Birnbaum was raised in Hollis Hills, NY, graduated from Queens College and attended yeshivot prior to college.
Rabbi Birnbaum is a member of the Rabbinical Assembly, the International Organization of Conservative Rabbis, and served on its national public relations committee. He is Recording Secretary of the New York Board of Rabbis and a member of the Interfaith Association of Religious Leaders of Nassau County. He is a member of UJA-Federation Medical Ethics Committee and is former co-chair of the Catholic-Jewish Dialogue of the Archdiocese of New York. He has been Vice-President of the Massachusetts Board of Rabbis, Secretary-Treasurer of the National Council of Ministries in Specialized Settings and Chair of the N.Y.C. Interreligious Chaplaincy Commission.
